Last month I cut my hair. Not just a trim. Not just a couple of inches. I cut about 7 inches of hair off. Yes, it was terrifying. No, I don’t regret it.
My graduation photo last May when my hair was at it’s longest.
Last December the day I cut my hair.
I go through stages with my hair. I grow it out super long, have fun doing all kinds of hairstyles, and then somewhere around every two years I decide I need a change.
I’m quite happy with my hair right now, but previously I’ve revceived some pretty horrendous haircuts when I’ve made the choice to go short. (There is a period of high school that I could show you photos of, but it’s better off to pretend that never happened.) But I think what I like this time around is that I had a clear idea of what I wanted before going in. Usually I’m just like “I want it shorter. Do whatever you think will look good.” But with the current long bob, or “lob” being all the rage, I had plenty of pictures saved on my phone and visions of what my hair could be.
Now granted, just because YOU know what you want your hair to look like, doesn’t always mean the hairstylist will be able to achieve that look. Be sure and ask your friends where they go and who they would recommend. I’ve even asked customers at work that had gorgeous hair where they go get it cut. Research is key to finding a talented hairdresser.
My everyday messy curls
Every time I cut my hair, I’m always shocked I kept it long for so long. Just in the last month the benefits of short hair keep presenting themselves. In case you are thinking about taking the plunge into lob territory, here are a few of those benefits.
1. DRYING YOUR HAIR HAS NEVER BEEN FASTER
I remember actually dreading washing my long hair because I’d have to section off the better part of an hour just to blow dry it. And if I let it air dry, I might as well expect damp hair for most of the day. Now I can literally go from soaking wet to dry in 15 minutes tops. No more damp hair days for me!
2. STYLING IS EVEN FASTER THAN DRYING
I really like the look of wavy, messy hair. Sadly, my hair is pretty darn straight on it’s own. So with my long hair I normally wouldn’t take the time to full on curl it, thus my hair usually just looked like it needed a good brushing all the time. Now, with a curling iron of a straightener, I can get beautiful curls and waves in 10 – 15 minutes. The first time I got ready for work after cutting my hair I was actually done getting ready way too early since it took less than half the time, AND my hair actually looked good.
3. IT DOESN’T GET TANGLED
And when I say it doesn’t get tangled, it really doesn’t get tangled. My long hair would be part way to dreadlocks by the time I got off work, especially if I had curled it. Now, I brush my hair once every morning just to maintain it’s health, but sometimes I feel like it doesn’t even need that.
4. IT’S NOT AS HEAVY
Wearing a pontail with long hair can look stunning and sleek (see my girl Iggy) but after a few hours, that stuff gets heavy! Having been a dancer for most of my life, wearing my hair up was a must, and by the end of practice, my head would be sore form holding up all that weight. Now, even though I sometimes laugh at how small my ponytail is, it’s certainly not weighing my head down.
5. IT DOESN’T GET IN YOUR WAY
Again, dancing with long hair in a ponytail can quickly turn into dodging a whip. Working out with long hair in general, aside form wearing your hair in a bun, can get cumbersome. Now I don’t even have to think about it. It takes almost nothing to hold my hair back out of my face and then I can do whatever I need to.
6. I GET TWICE THE VOLUME
Long hair doesn’t just weight down on your head when it’s pulled up. Just going about my day, my hair would be heavy and wouldn’t hold curl because of it. Like I said, I love wavy hair, so I hated having to start out my day with super tight curls just to end up pretty much straight by the end of the day. Now I can curl it and style it and it stays. Just like how I left it in the morning. Volume never dies down, even when I wear it straight.
Cutting my hair was one of the best decisions I’ve made recently, and of course it helps that Mike loves it too. 🙂
Have you made any changes lately that have turned out better than you hoped?
